Joining the Indian Army 

Shashank joined the Indian Army after his training. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant on 14 December 2024. He joined the Sikkim Scouts Regiment. This regiment works in very tough and cold places in the mountains. Soldiers here need to be very strong and brave.

Shashank was a new officer. He was in the Army for less than six months. But he was known for his calm mind and sense of duty. His seniors and friends respected him. He always cared for his team.

The Day of the Incident 

On 22 May 2025, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari was leading a patrol in North Sikkim. His team was going to a Tactical Operating Base. The area is very cold and has many fast rivers.

Around 11:00 AM, the team had to cross a log bridge over a strong mountain stream. One soldier, Agniveer Stephan Subba, slipped and fell into the water. The current was very strong. Without thinking about himself, Shashank jumped into the river to save him. Another soldier, Naik Pukar Katel, also jumped in to help.

Together, they pulled Agniveer Subba out of the water. But the current was too strong for Shashank. He was swept away by the river. The team tried very hard to find him. They found his body 800 metres downstream by 11:30 AM.
